Licorice,
known for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties

Licorice is used in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties owing to several bioactive compounds it contains. These compounds, including glycyrrhizin, glabridin, and licochalcone A, offer therapeutic effects that make them a valuable ingredient for a variety of products. Here, we explain briefly how and why licorice is used for its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

Soothing properties:

GLYCYRRHIZIN
- Similar effects to corticosteroids: glycyrrhizin has effects similar to corticosteroids, helping to ease inflammation without the side effects associated with steroids (aggression, hallucinations, sleep disorders, antisocial behaviors, antisocial behaviors, paranoia, and emotional instability).
- Reduces irritation: by moderating the immune response, helping to calm sensitive or irritated skin.

LICOCHALCON
- Soothes irritation: this compound is effective in soothing skin redness and irritation, often caused by inflammatory reactions.
- Hydration and protection: Licochalcone A helps maintain skin hydration and strengthen the skin barrier, thus protecting against external threats (pollution, temperature change etc.)

GLABRIDIN
- Inhibition of mild inflammations: glabridin has mild anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce feelings of tightness and discomfort in the skin.

Applications in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals

PRODUCTS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN
- Soothing creams and lotions:
products containing licorice are formulated to soothe sensitive skin, reduce redness and calm irritation. Soothing and anti-irritant, licorice calms cutaneous hypersensitivity and insect bites and thus reduces redness.
- Anti-redness serums: used to treat redness and reactive skin, licorice-based serums help even out skin tone and soothe the skin.

AFTER-SUN CARE
- After-sun creams & oils:
the soothing properties of licorice are used to relieve the skin after exposure to the sun, reducing redness and inflammation caused by UV rays.

ACNE TREATMENTS
- Anti-Acne products:
licorice helps to soothe the inflammations and redness associated with acne, while reducing the production of sebum.

Anti-inflammatory properties:

GLYCYRRHIZIN
- Inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines: glycyrrhizin reduces inflammation by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, molecules that signal and amplify the inflammatory response.
- Tissue protection: by reducing inflammation, glycyrrhizin  protects skin tissue and prevents cell damage.

LICOCHALCON
- Inhibiting inflammatory enzymes: licochalcone A inhibits the production of certain inflammatory enzymes, thereby helping to reduce inflammatory responses in the skin.
- Neutralization of free radicals: as an antioxidant, lichochalcone A neutralizes free radicals, reducing oxidative stress that can cause or worsen inflammation.

GLABRIDIN
- Reduction of UV-induced inflammation: glabridin is effective in reducing inflammation and skin damage induced by UV rays, helping to prevent sunburn and irritation.

Applications in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals

TREATING SKIN CONDITIONS
- Eczema and dermatitis:
licorice-based creams are used to treat inflammatory skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis, soothing itching and irritation.
- Psoriasis:
licorice helps reduce the patches and redness associated with psoriasis thanks to its anti-inflammatory properties

PRODUCTS FOR INTERNAL INFLAMMATION
- Gastric ulcers:
glycyrrhizin is used for its anti-inflammatory and protective effects on the stomach lining in the treatment of gastric ulcers.
- Respiratory infections: it is also used in formulations to soothe the respiratory tract and treat the inflammatory symptoms of respiratory infections.
